I tend to think fantasy novels can have some of the deepest meaning in all of fiction. Those that do end up being my favorite books.
Yep, you've got series set over multiple books allowing plenty of pages for character development. Along with the author given free hand to make the backdrop world fit whatever character development they'd like to do, they give much greater freedom in this regard that a more conventional shorter book 'shoehorned' into the real world does.
I actually kind of like Terry Goodkind's writing.
