I wanted her to read the Anne of Green Gables books and she wanted me to read a series called Warriors, about a bunch of wild cats, that she was crazy about. Neither of us were really keen on reading the other persons books and it took a while for us to make each other do it. We settled on promising to read the first book of the series. We both ended up reading and loving all of them. It was good for both of us.
