As a book, read for literature, read as literature,

So they have a proper grounding in literature since so many works reference these:
The Iliad and the Odyssey
The Aeneid
Metamorphoses
Decameron
The Divine Comedy
The Iliad and the Odyssey
The Aeneid
Metamorphoses
Decameron
The Divine Comedy
Then I would imagine one would need to add The Bible. At least the Old Testament. No other work is more important for a proper grounding in Western literature. Should I ever have child(ren), I will most certainly suggest they read the Old Testament. As a historical work of combined fiction/non-fiction.
What books (other than SF-F) do you consider "vital" reading?
