I'm really not a graphic novel fan at all, but Sandman is really very good. There's a strong story, excellent characters, and most of the drawings are beautiful.
I think the problem I have with him is that he tries to be so clever and hip that he comes off as really forcing it. I'm not sure that applies to Sandman, but I did buy the first volume, read it, and was content with never reading another.
Of course this is all opinion. Others love and swear by him, and it's always good to hear people share their love for an author, even if I don't happen to share it.
