A) Is the HBO series REALLY going to happen, or is he just letting his greed get the better of him while the HBO people toy with him?
It's in pre-production right now. The sets are being built, most of the actors have been cast, most of the crew have been assigned and the scrips for most of Season 1 have been written. Not sure what your point is here.
2) How did you find out this much info on the potential release date? (not that I doubt you, since you've been very reliable on things I've asked you in the past)
By being a mod on Westeros.org, we get every single bit of information from every possible source out there. The current plan (October/November completion for spring 2009 publishing) comes from multiple comments by GRRM on book tours in Finland and Estonia earlier this year, backed up by his comments at WorldCon two weeks ago and by his editor, who confirms it is almost done, at the San Diego Comic-Con.
D) Isn't death by airborne bovines more likely than it actually being released at this point?
