I do not really know why I stopped reading it (years ago), but I had a really good feel from the first book, but already missed that in the second book.
Isn't it a general problem with Card's books? I had the same problem you described with Ender's Game. #2 was a bit less, and so was #3 and stopped reading all together after that.

I think his writing, in general, has diminished since the release of the 5th book.
