Or at least, so I've been told, US bookshops store 'horror' (and related urban fantasy vampire books) randomly under 'SF' or 'Mainstream' (not 'Literature', just 'everything else', basically) depending on how they feel.
Here in the UK we have a totally separate 'Horror' section where the bulk of this stuff goes, neatly solving the problem.
