Are you saying it is possible to put down a book and the story will still be there later? Preposterous!
That is precisely what I am saying!

i have a copy of the hobbit, reprinted in the late 1960s, which has some "disclaimer" in the beginning about bilbo's deception regarding the finding of the ring. i have never found the same disclaimer in any other edition of the hobbit, but i have yet to find a version earlier than mine to compare it to. and the overall plot points of the book are still intact enough that i can have an in-depth conversation about the book without wondering whether or not i'm reading the same version of the story. it's just that one disclaimer that has haunted my enjoyment of the book for years now....
