Well, there are a few books she explicitly references and cites as inspiration. Legolas Send a noteboard - 14/02/2010 07:15:36 PM
But the thing about harry potter is that it gradually got darker, deeper and in a lot of ways better. It carried kids through a simple fun story and matured with them.

I've seen much the opposite with Twilight. IMO, it has a dumbing effect. I'm not saying people who don't read and then read Twilight will not go and read some more...but their tastes and opinions of books will forever be tarnished. I could easily see someone who started reading with Twilight scoff at reading LotR or even (maybe particularly) Harry Potter. Furthermore, what's a step up from Twilight? If you're some young unthinking mob-member of the Twilight Fan Club, the only place you're going to find book you enjoy is trashy romance novels. Not that trashy romance novels don't have their place, but they're hardly examples of outstanding literature. An actual fantasy or sci-fi novel might prompt one of these fangirls to think (Meyer forbid :P).

I'm not saying that's ALL Twilight readers...just the kind I hate :P

Heh. It just occurred to me Meyer is also a type of lemon. ha ha.

Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, Romeo & Juliet (no, really?), a few other Shakespeares. If you're some Twilight reader who looks down on LotR and HP (though one really wonders why; it's very hard to argue Twilight is even remotely as good as either of those, let alone better), you could still go read those books Meyer names as inspiration, and those books aren't a bad start for other literature.

But yeah, Twilight is ultimately more a romance novel (in the bad meaning of the word) than it is a fantasy one, so makes sense that its readers would gravitate more towards trashy romance novels.

As I don't believe we've actually had a review of this yet... Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. - 14/02/2010 04:08:51 PM 1637 Views
