Can't really comment.
I never bothered to read the books, since I've largely heard they were horrible and rubbish. But I tried out the show anyway and I liked it. It's a bit conventional, but it's still enjoyable. I'm waiting for the first book at my local library, I have it reserved, but there's a waiting list on it. Which kind of surprised me at first given the reputation of the books, but I suppose maybe other fans of the show are curious too.

This is my take too. Plus my sister who didn't read them thinks the series is rather original for TV

The books do have a large following and are all bestsellers.
