Water could be recycled quite a bit, though of course not entirely (probably not as much as it is in DUNE), since it's used in all sorts of biological reactions, but human waste would pretty quickly lose its nutrients.


IIRC it simply says that feces was 'stored' in the thigh pads, presumably it was removed when full or back in the sitetch for use as compost, after all the water had been leached out. Considering there were only 10 million fremen, and the sci-fi setting didn't seem to have any power generation problems, they really should have had no problem growing food hydroponically.
