Plus the TV series ROME is excellent, although by necessity somewhat dramatised.
Robert Graves' I, CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIUS THE GOD are reputedly 'the' classical historical Roman novels, although I haven't read them yet. I've seen the BBC adaptation which is superb (and, in the case of the scenes with John Hurt as the Emperor Caligula, very, very sick).
