The "fiction" requirement which keeps popping up here, for example, is a fairly new one -- isn't Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire literary, for example? Or Plato? Or Montaigne's essays?

I agree that graphic novels fall under the term, as I understand it. I haven't yet come across a computer game which does.
