I own Norwich's History of Venice (Folio Society edition) but haven't read it yet. Tom Send a noteboard - 05/03/2010 02:30:55 PM
It's on my short list of non-fiction, along with Jonathan Israel's The Dutch Republic. Of course, as both are fairly long books I'm likely to take a break with one of the books on my short list (see profile info) of "must-reads" in 2009 first after finishing Gibbon. Yes, I suppose I'll finish it.

I was encouraged by the untranslated Greek footnote about Theodora's lament that she only had three usable orifices. In an age when women were vying with each other to be more chaste, I can fully understand and approve of Justinian's choice for a wife.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius
