While Elantris, his first, is a pretty good first novel... it is much better in idea than in actuality. I would either pick up the first book in the Mistborn trilogy, which is as good a fantasy trilogy as I could recommend, or pick up his most recent stand alone novel, WARBREAKER.

Elantris is worth reading, but it isn't the best that Sanderson has to offer.
