it can be used as reference. perfectly valid, provided you cite the source, with author, year, title, the publishers:city, right?
Indeed. Except city should come before publishers and year, at least following MLA.
Example: I had gin & tonics in the bath tub.
Cf. Adams, Douglas. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A Trilogy in Four Parts. 1986. London: Pan Books, 1992. Print. p 266.
Cf? also, I think that using the APA system, the (print) year is supposed to come before the title. But you are right about the city before the publisher. No need to specify print though, if other than print, that should be specified. also, page numbers go into the reference in the text, not the bibliography, so that would be (Adams, 1992:266) in the text and not in the reference list.
I included the Cf to create the illusion that it is part of a sentence. In MLA, I believe, it is (Adams 266) alone in the text, unless you also happen to be citing other texts by the man. And the Print. addition is a new one that they introduced only recently. I have never used it.

Difficult here in Edinburgh, what with the way it doesn't keep to one direction. *NM*
