I forgot Laseen was assassinated. I didn't notice that Mallick Rel stepped up as Emporor, though.


That particular fact wasn't mentioned in either TtH or DoD, but it was pretty obvious in RotCG. ;) And it wasn't so much "stepped up", as "took over" since he'd colluded with Vorcan's daughter specifically to achieve that end.
