Except that Cthulhu would drag Rand and the other competitors into a void not connected with our time/space, so it's pretty moot.
Seriously, I think this has more to do with Cthulhu and Lovecraft being more of horror mythos than fantasy, and not many people have heard of the awesome monsters that H.P. created.
