(1. A scale for expressing the magnitude of earthquakes, named after an American seismologist (first name Charles). The scale ranges from 0 to 10.
Richter scale.
Richter scale.
Having very good reason to know both earthquake scales (not knowing them cost me money) I would like to point out that the Richter scale is both logarithmic and open-ended. It does not stop at 10.
A 10 would be cataclysmic, but when the San Andreas finally lets go and the land to the west drops under the Pacific, it will likely be more than a 10. The recent Chilean earthquake, at around an 8 was equivalent to the explosion of a billion tonnes of TNT. A 10 would be a trillion tonnes.
The old Mercalli scale used to stop at ten, but some Californians added eleven and twelve. 'Cos they understood.

I knew seven out of ten. Annoyed with myself for not guessing number 2.

Do you have a good reason, or were you just trying to get me back for the nagging?
