As a doctor, I have experience with ECT.
You'll be given a light general anaesthetic and they'll provide a single electrical shock to your temples. This will cause you to have a seizure. You'll wake up feeling exhausted and you'll have a headache.
However, ECT remains the most powerful and successful treatment of severe depression available. It cures 85% of people with major depressive disorder, whereas anti-depressants get no more than 60%. The electrical shock causes a massive release of noradrenalin and serotonin from your brain, and almost instantly alleviates mood disorders.
There are concerns about it's safety. Most people have problems with memory afterwards. Some people say it's transient but others suffer for a long time. Other side-effects are still being investigated.
You have to decide whether it's worth the risk to you. It's only indicated for severe and resistant depression, but a few sessions will probably improve your life, but also introduce side-effects. Hope this helps
