Mmm... ice-skating jumps. Cockatiel of Doom Send a noteboard - 24/04/2010 01:13:48 AM
heheh I used to say, "How now, sow-cow".

A lot of people do say "sowcow." I pronounce the "l" because I think they are weird.

also: when they announce "ooh that was a triple salchow" and then "ooh a triple toe loop"- am I the only one who does not notice any difference when they're whipping around in circles with their feet together at that speed? o.0

Well. A salchow and a toe loop are totally different! Clearly. :P

Salchows take off the back inside edge and take off from the edge (no toepick). Toe loops take off from the back outside edge of the other foot and use the toe pick to propel into the air. Loops, incidentally, are just like toe loops except that they take off just from the edge.

I admit that sometimes it can be tricky to tell, especially if they are fudging the jumps a bit. I was watching some replays from worlds recently and some people were switching feet so close to their actual take off that I was having a hard time telling my jumps apart. There were even a couple where it looked like they were using their toes on what should have been edge jumps...

Anyway, if you are confused, remember that you can always tell an axel as it is the only jump that takes off from a forward direction.

And if you read all that and actually understood it, congratulations. Next time we will get into flips and lutzes, and how they can sometimes be "flutzed."

:P
