I disagree entirely. Manusho Send a noteboard - 30/05/2010 07:10:19 PM
Why is a strike out a perfect out? Why is it more perfect then a ground ball out? Because it's more dominating? The goal of a pitcher is to get an out. Ground ball, fly ball, or strike out, they're all outs. Not all pitchers face a batter with the intent of striking him out. There are a lot of contact pitchers. They want the batter to put the ball in play. For that kind of pitch a perfect game could be 27 straight ground ball outs.

But I find even that ridiculous. Just because a pitcher throws a pitch out of the strike zone doesn't mean he made a mistake. Throwing a ball in the dirt on an 0-2 count to an aggressive batter is good strategy. If the batter happens to take it for a ball that doesn't mean it was a bad pitch or that the pitcher's performance is somehow diminished.

I would say at best a real perfect game would be a game where every pitch thrown by the pitcher went exactly where he wanted it to go and had the exact amount of movement that he wanted. All resulting in an eventual out for that at bat. But that's silly as well.

I don't disagree with you because your 'perfect game' is impossible but because I think your definition of a 'perfect out' is flawed.
