My SO has cut out breads and is eating raw vegetables and fruits this summer and has for the last three weeks. He sounds better and says that he has a sense of clarity out of the fog of the last semester, and he's not having other digestive issues. Because he's on your end of the country I'm not sure if this is all true or not. What's so funny to me is that he is naturally a high protein (read as: meat eating) guy. And we've been vegetarian for three years. I find that there would have to be a really good reason or medicinal need (my friend had to eat meat protein during her pregnancy) for me to eat meat. Being around it everyday at work I find that it can be more repulsive than if I was just going into a market for purchasing.
Personally, I like the macro concepts of what should be on a plate and the condiments that are used.
I agree that if you're going to eat another being that was walking or swimming around at least understand what you're doing and execute with decency. What is so bothersome is that during farm days for 4th or 5th graders the schools endorse a DADT policy. How would Suzy like to know that the steer she's petting and is saying is so cute, will be on her plate next week? Of course, the ag teacher at my HS always held it was the parent's responsibility to tell their children these things. . .

Whatever. Until one sees an animal hanging (dead of course) in the butcher shop, the actuality of what occurs may be obscured.
