I'm a Christian, and even that strikes me as, as you say, "tacky." *NM*

Regardless of your opinion of Christianity, religion, Jesus, etc. I think that many share the opinion that giant fiberglass and foam depictions of Jesus by the side of the highway are just tacky.
Did that stop people in Ohio? Of course it didn't.
They put up a monstrosity of a statue, six stories high. I wonder if they thought, "Hey, people will be driving down the highway, they'll see this ginormous statue of Christ, and they'll suddenly change their sinful ways and accept Him into their hearts. Oh, and of course they won't cause any accidents from being startled or distracted or anything."
Regardless of what they thought, God had other plans for the statue. Whether He was angry at the poor depiction, lack of taste, choice of venue or whether He was just frustrated that the builders ignored the laws of physics, weather and electricity, He rained down LIGHTNING on the statue.
And it caught fire. And it burned to the ground, leaving just a few metal struts.
Come, my friends. Bring your children. Let us watch Jesus burn.
