Hm, okay. Legolas Send a noteboard - 03/07/2010 11:58:51 PM
Offsides only apply if you are directly affecting the game from your position, and Villa wasn't offside when Pedro got the ball because he wasn't even close to it at that time. So therefore there is no call. When Pedro shoots, new situation and Villa is on-side again. If we compare this to the situation when Valdez scored, the player who was offside actually tried to reach the ball (directly on the pass), which makes the offside call correct.

I guess hitting the post does reset matters, then.
Spain hasn't been firing on all cylinders. Torres has been horrible, even if he did run a couple of times today, and iniesta and xavi haven't been playing the wonderful football they can do. Xabi Alonso has been sending balls over the sideline the entire tournament, and puyol has been downright bad. Casillas... no, not as good as he used to be. There are three players who are good: Villa, of course, ramos, and capdevila. That is not enough against a german team where more or less everyone is exceeding expectations. Now, it is realistic that the Spanish team play better than they have before, but they need to step it up a fair bit to win.

I can't agree entirely. Iniesta was very good today, brilliant at times. Xavi has been inconsistent, decent at times, but agreed, not his brilliant self. Casillas isn't in his best ever form, but he's good enough - and better than Neuer - even now. Other than that, yeah, but Spain is intrinsically so much better than Germany that they don't have to be 100% to win it. Especially with Germany without Müller. I would agree that Spain can't afford to let Torres be inefficient for another entire half, especially since for some reason Villa seems to fall back whenever Torres is on the field, and Villa is the guy you want inside or near the box. But I don't think they need to step it up all that much - they've played good enough football to win this several times during the tournament, including today. All they need do is be a bit more consistent about that.
