Is your brother-in-law in the army? Not a bad area. Nice and quite and you can be in Austin in about an hour and a half. Tends to be one of the more liberal parts of the state so you should fit in
.
.My youngest brother was in the army years ago and was stationed at Fort Hood.
You will also be on the edge of the Texas Hill Country which IMHO is the most scenic and friendliest part of Texas. Try spending the day at Colorado Bend State Park or Inks Lake. Both have great swimming areas with waterfalls and clear pools to swim as well as great hiking.
My sister is a great outdoors enthusiast and has been telling me all about the area.
