Amazon doesn't want people reading ebooks on anything but a Kindle (or something using Kindle software), so they have an inane format stuffed full of DRM.

I am not a fan of Amazon because of this, you may have picked up. :P

Barnes & Noble and Sony promote compatibility, but it's been an uphill battle so far.
