New silicon chips, built using lasers instead of copper wires, could push the speed up to 50 gigs a second, and that's 'just the beginning'. The article implies that a terabit per second speed is possible with this technology. (And it also mentions a petabit ... what the hell is a petabit?)

Two years, Intel says, to perfect the technology and manufacturing of the chips. That's perfect for me, I'll be done with grad school, and about ready for a new computer in 2-4 years. :)
