I get along with the OS just fine, but I'm upgrading the day Windows 7 comes out. I've already preordered my upgrade and am really looking forward to it.
Yes, it's only a moderate upgrade to Vista, but with the bad rep Vista has they had to release something with a new name. That said, it is said to be much less of a resource hog, so everything on the computer runs faster, from startup to programs in general. In addition to that they've done some interesting cosmetic and functional changes that I'm quite eager to check out. The task bar is one of them.
The new task bar takes some getting used to, and honestly I am not sure I find it that more efficient. You'll just have to try the differences out and determine whether you like them or not.
Also, I am not sure I find it faster than Vista or not, but I maxed my RAM out after a few months of owning my computer so I have run both on 2 Gigs. I can't see Windows reverting to lesser amounts in RAM so I imagine Windows 7 should be maxed too.
I think that it's quite worth the upgrade cost, but I say that knowing that I got my upgrade when it was on the super cheap pre-release sale. You should be able to get the software pretty cheap from your school though, so that really shouldn't be an issue for you.

Both platforms have their advantages, both have disadvantages, neither is for everyone. *NM*
