I mean, I can't remember too many movies where the Russians were major players...it was usually SPECTRE in the old days and then a series of independent madmen in the later films.

I'm hardly a Bond aficionado, but that seemed to be the case in most of the films I saw, and on a few occasions I believe he even wound up working in concert with Soviet (or satellite) spies against the independent third party. Usually some independently wealthy industrialist who either refused to tolerate the malfeasance of ALL governments or simply wanted absolute power/wealth for himself was the villain. Hmmm, were the Bond books/films THEMSELVES commie propaganda...?
