but our parasitology teacher had a family member who was told that, and he's had clients call him about it too...so maybe it's just a stupid american doctor thing

Glad that YOU at least were taught right Although I don't know about doctors here. Apparently, our medical community has decided parasites are a veterinary problem and don't teach courses like Parasitology.
