When I was working at Wife Swap one of the families, that very heavily believed in 2012, kept 'survival' packs just like you describe. The kids even had to take them to school and such.

What's amazing is how much stuff you can put in a backpack. That thing must weight 40+ pounds.



(If he was a real 2012 nut, he'd probably move to the middle of the country and become a sustenance farmer ... )
