Recently, my right hand and arm have been swelling up and hurting for no discernable reason. My doctor ordered blood tests for me, so I have to wait a couple of weeks to find out what's going on.

A couple weeks? That doesn't seem right

That, however, was on the assumption it was probably a one-off occurence, so we didn't discuss what might be the problem. Today it happened again, so I saw the duty doctor at the surgery. He said that it was likely to be an inflammatory joint disease. After looking that up it certainly fits and seems likely.

Is that his explanation of rheumatoid arthritis? That doesn't seem right, either...

Well, I don't know about you, but I hope he's not right. :P

It can get pretty crazy, plus, it usually affects middle-aged to elderly people (esp. women) and doesn't really have this episodic pattern you described. It's more of a gradual worsening, bilaterally, usually starting from your hands/feet moving on to shoulders/knees/hips/neck (but NOT your back).

I can post the text of a Harrison's chapter on RA if you really want, but yeah it probably isn't (unless the blood test results support it -- you never know; that's why they love to run blood tests, not because they're secretly vampires or something :P).

Do any of you here have that problem?

No, and I hope not to.

If so, how do you deal with it? When my joints are swollen I cannot hold a pen or use a mouse or type very easily. How do you manage to do those things in daily life?

I'm not sure... if it happens, probably try to get the swelling to go away. Moving probably irritates it more. Ideally, stop it from swelling at all, but that involves knowing what caused it.

Obviously, it mightn't be that, but either way if this keeps happening I need to know how to deal with it. My daily job is using a computer, writing notes, etc. Swollen joints make that very difficult.

Yeah, hopefully it isn't.
