The setup didn't so much rely on having Bismarck or someone just like him (in fact, it seems pretty clear he intended the Kaiser to be self sufficient once the Iron Chancellors task was done) it just depended on whoever was in charge not being a megalomaniacal idiot. " Hmmm, maybe objecting to how other governments are run should've waited till the Americans left. :P
Most people consider it in bad taste to use Southern minstrel songs to defend patriotism :P (though I concede this is the first time I've seen a Brit do it. ;))

I can imagine that is the case. Not relevant unless are you mixed up on where states are?

It was just a bit unexpected, and the context made that jarring. Most people wouldn't even make the connection any more, since the days of the minstrel shows popularity are mercifully behind us.
