We had a thread about sliced bread before. It was discovered in 1928, which is the same year penicillin's bactericidal properties were discovered. So, I would have said penicillin but I can't. Well, I'll have to say the discovery of phenol as an antiseptic (1860s).

2. When you lose a sock in the laundry, what happens to it?
The person who uses the machine after you is stuck with an extra sock. I've found extra socks in the laundry before and it's kind of weird.
