I'm not sure how much you use the special characters and whether or not the alt+num thing is good for your ends, but if nothing else I suppose people on the site just generally wanting to know how to quick use some of the less common stuff without having to paste it every time might like it, IMHO it's easier to type deg then memorize ° or use +/- instead of ±, K=1/2mv^2 then K = ½mv² unless you do it a lot, but worth knowing it's out there

What's frustrating me atm is that the fiancees laptop doesn't have a keypad so I can't type Alt+241 or Alt+248 for ± and ° (hey, I grew up with ASCII, but that they're adjacent in unicode is amusing; apparently I'm not as weird as we all thought

That IS a handy link though, thanks; every now and then I find myself absolutely refusing to use a substitute character that I KNOW has an ASCII value, and it's annoying to have to hit four keys to produce each of twenty or thirty characters until I stumble on the right one again. I didn't know you could key unicode characters the same way though, or at least, didn't know how even if it did seem very likely to be possible.
Not forgetting your other responses, btw, I've just been mind-screwing myself on a rather thought intensive essay the past couple days so potshots at silliness on the WoTMB has been about all the online activity I've managed. Should catch up tomorrow, and, again, sorry to keep you waiting.

Hitting "Alt+144" every time I need to type É is not really a solution.

How many languages do you need to routinely access? Are you opposed to keyboard stickers?

Agreed. If I want to write in French, I have to use Word.

Obviously the solution is to be less educated. Who needs French?

Use a UK keyboard instead of US, and press Alt GR + vowel for acute accents.
