Well, yes, but there's a fair amount of that in the real world, it's just that Facebook has a way of encouraging it. By reducing most interaction to public announcements of the most mundane and trivial details of peoples lives, with email notification, no less, it distills the most vain human tendencies into pure egotism, even when people don't intend it that way. I don't think most people really MEAN to notify 100 people every time their cat hawks up a hairball, they just think it's a minor amusement/annoyance to dash off in a quick status update without stopping to think it's being broadcast at most of their family/friends/coworkers/people behind them once in a supermarket checkout line. They COULD just message it to the two or three people interested enough in cats to care, but that would require more time and effort than they can justify. So everyone gets it instead.
