The margins of profit in the health insurance industry are so razor thin that they have to do it

which is part of why some people are so interested in reform. People shouldn't have to worry about being dropped if it's something they can't help. (or charged into destitution, but that's another can of worms)
I mean, even look at Aetna. They are the biggest health insurance company in the U.S. with membership numbers that dwarf my company's membership numbers, yet as a whole my company has made more profit in 9 months than Aetna does in an entire year. Yes, they make over a billion dollars in profit in a year, but that's with more than 50 million active policies (that is counting the dental, and other policies they offer as well, so many of these people have multiple policies). We're talking an average profit of roughly 20 bucks or so per policy...it doesn't take much to change 20 dollars of profit to a net loss.
It just highlights why real health care reform is needed. From costs to patients, to costs to insurance companies, tort law, malpractice, all of that. The whole system needs reworked.

It's a "women's issue." Don't go bringing rational thought into it.

Yes, I do know how insurance works. Using that as an excuse for denial is still unethical and sick. *NM*
