Asus, Toshiba, Sony, Samsung as my first four picks, it is hard to go wrong with any of those four brands.
I also like Acer (I have an acer timelineX and before it was stolen an Acer timeline, both are 11 inch laptops.) That said you buy an Acer not because of its reliability but because the occasionally try to do things different than the other OEMs (such as squeezing a video card in a 13 inch laptop, or being one of the first companies to make a cheap ultraportable laptop 11 incher with a real processor that wasn't atom based, or because they are cheap. You don't buy an acer for its quality, they are more reliable than hp but that is not saying much.
I have a loathing for Dell, and I have mix feelings about Lenovo.

Toshiba Satellite laptops start at about $330. Fairly sturdy and reliable.
