It's the kind of subtle vengeance only an inscrutable brain in a box can accomplish. While you're soundly and supposedly safely in your bed, it is silently plotting, always, and if you're one of those people who don't disconnect your internet when it's not in use, you may rest assured (so to speak) that it is availing itself of assistance from its brethren and sistren online. As a sidenote, this is why cyberpunk will always be scarier than steampunk. 

Glad it all worked out though; I too well recall the click-click of imminent hard drive death and the importance of backups it represents.
