Too much of the American economy, the American culture, was based on the kind of conspicuous consumption memorialized (perhaps literally) by the SUV craze. If human driven global warming is a reality, mitigating, let alone reversing, the damage will mean the same kinds of significant sacrifices that motivates the American rights opposition to social programs. The real puzzler is how they think they'll be insulated from the effects, but, like those of an impoverished, malnourished, unhealthy and uneducated general public, are indirect for many and thus easier to dismiss.
