I've never used flux on lead - thought there was a reason it was only for copper foil. Always used wax (well, tallow) - used normal candle wax the last few times I'm sure and it worked fine. Maybe I'm remembering wrong though as this time it didn't work at all. Still, I have fluxed the joints now and it's all fine. Though I did manage to melt a bit of the lead :(
