I've never used flux on lead - thought there was a reason it was only for copper foil. Always used wax (well, tallow) - used normal candle wax the last few times I'm sure and it worked fine. Maybe I'm remembering wrong though as this time it didn't work at all. Still, I have fluxed the joints now and it's all fine. Though I did manage to melt a bit of the lead

My stained glass teacher told me that if your lead has aged (oxidized) then you need flux more than if it's new. I'm guessing you're either using lead you've had around for a while, or the store sold you some lead they've had around for a while. You could probably polish it and not need the flux. I'm not familiar with using candle wax/tallow.

Thank you for the compliment - I need to get back into working with stained glass, it's been a while. Just so much to do, though.
