I was all set to argue, then I read the other new responses. Joel Send a noteboard - 18/07/2011 06:36:05 PM
Our profligate ways aren't changing, though. We continue to piss away wealth on military adventurism while we follow a ruinous economic ideology that has delivered illusory gains to the economy from the service sector and a further hollowing out of industry. Put another way, we're sapping the economic vitality which underpins our standard of living. Unless that changes this latest row will simply be followed by another in the near future as the economy becomes ever weaker, necessitating another round still until the dollar simply implodes.

Made it a lot harder to argue when I wasn't really sure I disagreed in the first place; the whole "we can keep letting corporate America ship manufacturing jobs to China because the UAW is evil and you can support your family working at McDonalds or Wal$Mart" thing touched a nerve. :[ They keep telling us how incomes are rising in China and creating a wonderful new market; they better be right, because American consumers will soon be unable to buy their products (and nearly are already). I don't think the public is as clueless about the situation as the Greedy Old Party believes though; they may not be able to give you a point by point analysis of HOW trickle down, supply side laissez-faire (though no one promoting it wants to admit that last one) "economics" is screwing them, but after a decade or so most people do realize it's happening and who's causing it.
As to the CBO, straight-line projections beyond a few years are crap. And if this particular one used data from before the NASDAQ crash in 2000, then it's not even worth that.

Fair point, but the flip side is that we also don't know what would have happened if we'd responded to that intelligently instead of with supposedly stimulating tax cuts.
