Having a balanced point of view appears to be anathema in contemporary America.

or:

Having a balanced point of view appears to be anathema to members of Congress.

Not qualifying it is theoretically okay, but it does look a bit odd. It implies that it is anathema, say, to God, or the universe.
"it's like the real world, except there's dragons!"
