In one particular space opera, it's a mix and probably the best situation possible for humans. Vivien Send a noteboard - 29/09/2011 10:21:42 PM
In the Scolian Saga, there are 3 sides- the Allied Worlds (Earth and Earth's colonies), Scolia, and Eube. Both Scolia and Eube are more advanced technologically than the Allied Worlds. However, they're so concerned with each other that the Allied Worlds can kind of take a back seat to the conflict and be neutral. Part of it is that the Allied Worlds are weaker than either Eube or Scolia but they're strong enough that they'll be able to tip the balance so neither Eube nor Scolia is about to provoke them and naturally they don't want to join the conflict of their volition because they want to live.

However, it seems like it's the Allies' culture that's spreading the most. A couple of times characters have joked that while the Eubians and the Scolians are concerned with each other they're not realizing that the Allies are taking over with their burgers and movies.

They certainly are possible, but why don't think think trade agreements, diplomacy, friendship, etc...etc... aren't possible? They may be hard and people may WANT something else, but that's everything in life.

What Aeryn said. Also, domination doesn't have to be violent, although that's likely. It could be just a domination of culture-trade agreements, diplomacy and friendship don't always work out to be that great for the less advanced group. Unfortunately, I think the most likely option would be something akin to Aborigines in Australia when Europeans started showing up.

Also, humans are pretty awful. If this other alien civilization is really wonderful and respectful of life they'd probably dislike us because we're so bad.
