Those tries were France's 3rd and 4th of the game. If you score 4 tries or more in a game, you get 4 points for the win plus a bonus point. As the top 2 teams from each pool of 5 teams qualify for the quarter finals, a bonus point could be the difference between playing in the quarter finals and going home early.

Not being up on the World Cup tourny rules I could not be sure. As noted in Wikipedias article, in situations like that running up the score is an invalid concept.
