He most certainly did help cover up the entire scandal. And, since you don't know anything about Penn State or Joe Paterno then I will fill you in. He is in charge there, what he says goes, he is a god there. When the Athletic Director talked to him five or six years ago about retiring (because Penn State had been bad for a while) he basically said no and told him he would coach until he decided not to. He told HIS BOSS basically to blow him! All Joe Paterno had to do after any of the three main incidents was tell the police. Yet he refused to. He ignored it. Ignored child rape. Touching a child is bad enough. Sandusky was, by the grand jury indictment accusations, repeatedly raping children. Yet, Paterno continued to turn his head as Sandusky was allowed Emeritus status and given keys to do whatever he wanted at the university. That must have been a little odd, eh? Walking down the hall and seeing Sandusky coming the other way> "Hey coach, good morning." "Uh, hi?" Awkward...

Of all the people there on campus, he had the ability to stop it immediately; instead he let a criminal walk around freely to continue to do what he wanted to more children and to get away with it.

So, yeah, that does make him a bad person. If it doesn't then what do you think does make someone a bad person?

I was under the impression that he told his superior, whose responsibility dealing and investigating such matters is. This guy was his friend, wasn't he? Why would he believe that his friend was engaged in such activities? He'd toss such accusations out of his mind immediately because it is such an incongruous thought.

Look, I don't know what happened, I don't know all the details of it, and whether my scenario above is true or not. I just know that there are many potential explanations other than him purposefully covering up for a criminal. So I don't think automatically that he's a bad person. And perhaps even more importantly, I don't think every person criticizing him right now would have acted in the way they wish he had, due to situational luck.

Fair enough. I can see how you said that in light of your explanation here. And in light of past disagreements we may have had, I wasn't trying to jump on you about it, but if you do look into the entire story and timeline I think you might change your mind pretty quickly.
There was some really sick stuff going on and I think this is only touching the surface. What comes out now that it is in the media and can't be covered up anymore might be even more shocking.
For example, just what role did the missing DA have in all of this and is his disappearance related? That can of worms has been opened back up.
Also, there is a journalist investigating an allegation (and this is not by any means fact at this point) that Sandusky was just the go-to guy for wealthy donors who were taking the boys and abusing them for large donations. Dear God, let's all hope that isn't true!
I just can't stomach the idea that Paterno could get away with being complicit in such a sick scandal just because he's "Joe Pa".
