I generally agree, but feel obliged to note the "isn't American" comment may not have meant birthers - Edit 1

Not of course that I am referring to you, you definitely didn't post into the voter thread 4 times in an explicitly political manner, just last week.

I think I've now commented into four threads pointing out the phenomena, as recently as here. Here's the list of 'sanctioned subjects' for the CMB, if you would:

RAFO Stuff
Profile Pictures
Current Events
War
History
Religion
Sports
Pop Culture
Survey
Humour
Philosophy
Science
Politics
Miscellaneous

So you can scratch Current Events, War, Religion, and Philosophy right of with politics because those threads turn angry as fast and often faster than Politics. Actually science and history would probably have to got too, because other than short sci threads with 'neat' appended to them most of those turn into political discussions too. So, excluding Miscellanous, of the 13 'primary subjects' we just scratched off 7, leaving Survey, Humor, Pop Culture, Sports, and Profile Pcitures and RAFO Stuff. Even sports has been political of late with Paterno and Tebow, and pop culture often sets it off too. Precious little left over, the surveys and quizzes people knock out occassionally, those genuinely do well. Sports does decent but there's a big chunk of us who don't click into those much, and for a lot of the rest of, people's profile pics, a rarely used field anyway, aren't hugely of interest. And regrettably, RAFO Stuff is a fairly exclusive category. I'd have nothing to post into it. So for most of us, that would need to limit us to primarily humor and quizzes. There's no category for NSSP, that's what the journals are for anyway, I don't think the CMB would last long.

One sidenote by the way, seeing as your own political views are neither moderate or secret, your example "blah blah..your guy isn't really american..blah" is crappy. I don't think anyone on this site is or was a birther, and just about every time that has gotten raised it was someone bitching and moaning about people bitching and moaning about it, not anyone actually saying it. You might as well claim all the right-wingers on the site are anti-gay, when just about every openly right-wing poster is on record supporting gay marriage. Hell, especially with Trzaska cooling it, there are just about zero political threads opened by the right-wingers here. If you want to complain about nasty political conversation, my advice would be to pick on from your side of the fence as opposed to a fictional one the other side allegedly uses that in reality on this site most included people from the right condemning people who were birthers. You want to do a piece essentially condemning and exiling contentious political posts, don't pick insulting fictional examples from the other side to illustrate it.

And we did just get done with a nice armistice in which almost no political posts were made. I hate to point out that during that same time, posting was way, way down. People should be careful about provocative titles, and people should call them on that, otherwise this stuff is all self-inflicted wounds. I can see clicking into a thread with a title that's just terribly obnoxious, because its simple title gives offense, but most of these threads have fairly polite titles and are exactly what's written on the can.

Bearing in mind that I relate to you a lot better than I do Amy, she may have been referring to the reflexive habit of many on the far right (including some posters here) to equate "liberal" with "un-American" and/or "un-patriotic." I would cite examples, but am not inclined to parse their merits (which our shared fascination with detail combined with our disparate politics ensures would happen. ;)) You know what I mean though, the classic "America: Love it or leave it" sentiment.

The CMB in general needs what it has always needed: People who dislike the predominance of a few topics to post others, and maybe get some friends to join them. I did not set out to be the guy with the most CMB posts, and would not be if this were wotmania at practically ANY point in its history. I post less here than I ever did there, yet the frequency there always fell behind plenty of people (well, OK, maybe not in the final months, but I wanted to hit 20k before the site closed.)

Politics did not make the CMB a ghost town; the CMB becoming a ghost town made it heavily political, because only politics remained when all else was gone.
