I really don't want to defend Evangelicals, but I can understand the distinction there, too. Tom Send a noteboard - 27/01/2012 04:31:18 AM
Gingrich is now, in 2012, stating that he has been faithful to his third wife and that he asked for forgiveness back in 2000 when he married her, and says he has been faithful to her these past 12 years.

The Clinton situation, on the other hand, was fresh when Clinton "asked God for forgiveness" and he had no "track record" of keeping with what he said, so it could have just been empty words. From what I can tell, despite not ending his political marriage, Clinton still screws nearly anything that moves (and seems attracted to the ugly ones, which is probably the greater fault), so there are reasons to doubt that he felt real contrition.

It's certainly not how I would judge the candidates (I don't care about their private lives at all unless for some reason it would negatively impact their performance in office), but there is some form of logic there.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius
